The Centre City Council is ironing out some of the details of its $250,000 Community Development Block Grant for the new building to house the Children’s Advocacy Center of Cherokee County.

Earlier this year, the city was notified that it had received the grant through ADECA and had 180 days to begin construction. During a recent council meeting, Centre Mayor Phil Powell said he met with Jim Crouse, project manager. Advocacy Center personnel discovered that the lot upon which they plan to construct the building was inadequate. Currently they are looking at other sites with existing buildings as possibilities.

Councilwoman Bess Yarbrough suggested that the council begin making plans for the 2008 Fall Festival which is planned for the first weekend in October. Centre City Clerk Mary Lee Tucker noted that Country Singer Ray Stevens recently performed in Boaz and suggested that if the city wishes to book a similar act(s), that they need to begin making contacts immediately. The council scheduled a meeting for Thursday, July 10, at 1 p.m., to begin making plans for Fall Festival.

On recreation matters, Councilman Harry Moon said they had contacted the company responsible for the latest upgrade to Centre’s tennis courts in the industrial parts. The council has heard complaints that the balls don’t bounce well on the court and other problems.

Moon said Parks and Recreation Director Charles Glazner sent photos to the company and that they hope to hear something soon.

Glazner also told the council that they need at least one additional lifeguard for the Centre Swimming pool. He also stated that they do have a certified person in mind. The council agreed to consider hiring someone and declaring an emergency situation.

Councilwoman Rita Stubbs said a ditch needs to be cleaned on Appleton Street. She also mentioned again a house in the area which the council needs to consider for condemnation proceeds under the city’s lien and clean act
