Amanda Crane officially gained her wings last week. Cardinal wings, to be exact.

On Apr. 8, the Sand Rock senior signed a basketball scho-larship to Gadsden State Com-munity College.

The daughter of Dennis and Terri Crane and the late Rebecca Crane, Crane led the county in scoring and rebounding in 2002-03, averaging 19.2 points and 11.2 boards per game while helping the Lady Wildcats reach the Class 2A Northeast Regional final.

Crane’s career cage honors include being selected to the AHSAA All-State Honorable Mention Team, a four-time member of the 2A, All-Area 13 team, three-year member of the All-County squad and 2003 County Co-MVP.

“We are extremely proud to have Amanda join the Lady Car-dinal family,” said GSCC head coach and AJCCC 2002-03 Coach of the Year Kim Nails. “It’s our goal to always recruit quality student-athletes at Gadsden State, and Amanda is certainly at the top of that list. I’m very proud of her achievements in the classroom as well as on the court. She’s a shining example of what a student athlete should be.

“I want to congratulate Coach [Lisa] Bates on the great job that she has done with the Sand Rock Lady Wildcats, and I also want to congratulate Amanda and her teammates on a great season.

“I’m very excited to watch Amanda’s progress this summer on in the weight room as well as on the floor. We see her as a No. 5 player with a great outside shot, and as a possible No. 4 player with good height. We invite all of her fans, friends and family out to our campus this fall to watch Amanda and the rest of the Lady Cardinals.”

“I’m very excited to play at the next level at Gadsden State,” said Crane. “It will be good for me to learn a different type of game, and the coaches all are good people.”

“I’m very proud of Amanda, and proud of her teammates for their support, because a player needs good teammates to be successful,” said Bates. “I’m glad that she’s going to Gadsden State and to a coaching staff that really cares about her. She’s going to a program that wants her to succeed as a player and as a person.”

The 2002-03 Lady Cardinals posted a 20-7 record, the team’s first 20-win season since the school officially became GSCC in 1985. Gadsden State ranked third nationally in scoring (81.7 ppg), field goal percentage (53.3%), free throw percentage (69.1%) and three-point field goals made (221).

The Lady Cardinals also finished eight in the nation in total defense (59.9 ppg) and three-point field goal percentage.

The team was also successful in the classroom last semester, as the Lady Cardinals sported a 3.3 team GPA while nine of its 13 roster players either made the President’s List or the Dean’s List
