It was close but no cigar for Cedar Bluff on Dec. 9, as the Tigers (2-2, 1-1) came up short against Collinsville, 51-46.
The host Panthers had a 14-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Matt Wilson’s three point basket capped an 18-4 Cedar Bluff run, cutting the Tiger deficit to two points with 34.5 seconds remaining.
The visitors then intentionally fouled to have a rebound opportunity off one-and-one foul shot situations, but Cody McMullins made three of four free throws over the final 30 seconds to secure Collinsville’s Class 1A, Area 10 win.
Saul Simpson led the Panthers (5-1, 3-0) with 27 points and 20 rebounds.
For the Tigers, Ray Flynt scored 14 points, including four 3-point baskets.
Brandon Langley added 10 points and grabbed 10
rebounds.
Maddrick Long and Jeremy Bryant each pulled down six rebounds.
The lead changed hands nine times in the first quarter, with Tyler Crane’s basket at 35.2 giving Cedar Bluff a 13-12 advantage.
The hosts took the lead with a 15-4 run until Flynt’s trey with six seconds left before halftime drew the visitors within 27-20.
Langley’s free throw at 2:54 of the third quarter cut the Panther lead to five points, but Collinsville answered with Gavin Myers’ basket and Vandy Hall’s three-pointer for a 34-24 advantage heading into the final frame.
After Jaimus Richey’s basket at 4:09 of the fourth period pushed the host's lead to 42-28, Maddrick Long notched three of the next four Tiger basket to make it a six-point Panther lead, while consecutive treys from Flynt and Wilson’s three-pointer allowed Cedar Bluff to get within 48-46 with under a minute left on the clock.
McMullins hit his foul shots down the stretch, however, and a Tiger turnover in the final second wrapped up the Panther win.
