Former Cherokee County High School basketball standout and Berry College senior Amber Wood has been named to the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association Academic All-America team.

It is the second straight year in which Wood has earned the honor.

During the 2003-04 season, the Centre native averaged 4.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Wood also was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, hitting 28-of-31 free throw attempts.

During her three-year Berry career, Wood averaged 5.8 points per game and shot 84 percent from the free throw line. She was one of just four Lady Vikings to play in all 34 games this year.

As a CCHS sophomore, Wood led the 1997-98 Lady Warriors to the Class 4A state basketball title.

She was named All-County four times and twice was selected as a first-team All-State pick. She also was named to the 2000 USA Today National Girls' Basketball Team as an honorable mention selection. Wood ended her high school career with school-record 2,172 points and finished third all-time in Alabama for career three-pointers made with 332.

A religion major, Amber is the daughter of Johnny and Teresa Wood
