Two county student-athletes showcased their skills during last week’s AHSAA All-Star Sports Week in Montgomery.

CCHS incoming senior Anna Kisor was a member of the North volleyball squad, while Spring Garden incoming senior Mikie Garner was on the North basketball roster.

Both games were held last Thursday, with Kisor’s North team falling to its southern counterpart, 25-19, 17-25, 16-25, 25-20, 11-15, in an afternoon match at Montgomery Academy. It was the South’s first victory since 2000.

Thompson’s Pamela Cartegena and Laura Demaioribus were selected as South and North MVP, respectively.

Later that evening, Garner and her North teammates posted a 98-69 win over their southern opponent at Auburn University - Montgomery. It was the North’s fifth straight win.

In 11 minutes of playing time, Garner notched one rebound.

Fairfield’s DeWanna Bonner and Abbeville’s Robin Porter were named North and South MVP, respectively.

Despite her team coming up short, the Lady Warriors’ All-State setter enjoyed her time in the Capitol City.

“It was an awesome experience just to get to play in this type of game,” said Kisor, who totaled four assists, three digs and one kill. “The coach had to get everyone in, so I was happy with my playing time. For a group that had girls from so many different teams, and a few of them from my rival schools, we worked well together.”

Kisor last season totaled 1,158 assists and 125 kills while helping the Lady Warriors to a 53-10 record. A knee injury limited her during the postseason, but CCHS still managed to make to the Class 4A state semifinals.

The game was somewhat bittersweet for Kisor, as Jon Moseley stood behind her as her coach for the final time.

Moseley confirmed that he accepted the Guntersville High School volleyball head coaching position.

“Coach Moseley is the only coach that I’ve ever played for [at CCHS], and I’m sad that he’s leaving,” said Kisor.

“I’m very proud for Anna,” said Moseley. “It’s a great honor for her to be selected as the north part of the state’s 12 best players. She really has come a long way in her career, and now she’s a great setter. I’ve known Anna since she was born, and she’s like a little sister to me. She’s the one player that I’ll really miss.

Moseley, whose eight-year CCHS career included five Elite Eight appearances and three state runner-up squads, noted that that his decision to leave his successful Lady Warrior program was not at all an easy one.

“It was a difficult choice, but it’s a great oppor-tunity for me at Guntersville. I grew up in Cherokee County and graduated high school there, and it’s the only place that I’ve ever worked. I really loved working with the folks [at CCHS], and I’ll miss everyone very much.”

Garner, who last season as an All-State center contributed 14.1 points, 8.8 re-bounds and 2.8 steals in the Lady Panthers’ 2003-04 34-1 Class 1A state championship run, pointed out that points were not a premium for her.

“I wasn’t too concerned about scoring,” said Garner, who was also selected as a Class 1A Player of the Year finalist. “I just wanted to make a few defensive stops, and I did that. It was a real privilege to be on a team with such talented players and great coaches. I had the chance to learn, even if I didn’t play that much.”

Garner’s high school head coach viewed the game as a tribute to his player’s hard work.

“Rewards like this game go along with hard work and discipline,“ said Ricky Austin. “Mikie’s been a very good representative of Spring Garden. All of our kids have been good representatives of our program, but Mikie was just fortunate to be chosen for this honor. I wasn’t hoping that she’d score 25 points. I was just hoping that she’d have fun, and I think that she did.
