Last Tuesday (Feb. 8) at Collinsville, one county team’s season ended while another’s moved on.
No. 4 seed Cedar Bluff defeated No. 5 seed Gaylesville, 60-47, in the Class 1A, Area 10 Tournament play-in game.
The Tigers faced the No. 1 seed host Panthers in a semifinal game last Friday.
Chesnut put in a solid two-way performance, collecting 18 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 6-for-8 at the foul line.
Rodney Guins led Cedar Bluff with 21 points.
Terrell Irons grabbed eight rebounds, while Jeremy Bryant pulled down six.
Matt Wilson contributed six steals and four assists.
Tyler Bradford led the Trojans (1-23, 0-8) with 15 points, all in the second half.
Jerry Stancil and Rick Peek each added 11 points, followed by Tait Blankenship with 10.
Stancil grabbed 10 rebounds, had four blocks and came up with three steals.
“It definitely wasn’t as pretty as I’d have liked, but it’s a ‘survive and move on’ mode at this time of the year,” said Cedar Bluff head coach Joe Carpenter. “Gaylesville played us tough tonight. Collinsville is a well-coached team that plays tough man-to-man defense, and it should be a good challenge for us.”
“I feel bad for [senior] Jerry [Stancil], but the kids played hard and kept the score close for most of the game,” said Gaylesville head coach Drew Davis. “We have a lot of kids coming back next year, so hopefully we’ll make some improvement.”
After Peek’s basket at 6:29 of the first quarter provided the Trojans with their only lead of the game, Cedar Bluff finished off the period with a 16-4 run that Wilson capped with his three-pointer at 1:10.
A 6-0 stretch early in the second frame cut the Tiger lead to 20-12, but Andrew Alexander’s two free throws with two minutes remaining in the half sent Cedar Bluff into the locker room with a 28-14 halftime advantage.
Gaylesville couldn’t close the gap in the third quarter, as six points each from Chesnut and Guins helped the Tigers go up 46-29 after 24 minutes.
A 7-0 run midway through the fourth period brought the Trojans within 50-38, but that was as close as Gaylesville could get, and Cedar Bluff extended its season for at least one more game.
