The organization’s 2005 inductees are Spring Garden High School and Jacksonville State basketball standouts Dana Bright Austin and Jana Bright McGinnis, longtime Cedar Bluff High School football coach L.D. Bruce, Cherokee County High School baseball standout Greg Jelks, longtime CCHS football coach Bobby Joe Johnson, Gaylesville High School and Sand Rock High School football coach Roy Knapp, Sand Rock High School basketball standout Wendell Lawson, Sand Rock High School football standout Ronnie Shaw and CCHS and Samford University football standout Paul “Shorty” Trammell.

Johnson, who coached the Warriors from 1966-1991, reached the elite group of football coaches with 200 career wins during his 30-year career.
Johnson posted a 198-80-3 record (with only one losing season) at Centre. During this span, the Warriors made the playoffs 14 times while capturing 11 area titles.
The ’67 Warrior squad posted an 8-0-1 regular season, and CCHS went 8-1-0 the following season while being ranked fifth in the new Class 3A alignment.
Johnson’s 1973 squad had a 10-0 regular season record.
The squad wound up finishing third in Class 3A.
Johnson’s 1984 team was the state runner-up, while the 1987 squad finished 11-1.
Many of Johnson’s former players went on to compete in college football: John Hill, Jim Hill, Chad Gladden, Martin Houston and Chris Tillery at Alabama; Tim Cahoon and Billy Wood at Georgia; Jimmy Griffith at Florida; Jack Adrian, Ralph Bishop Sam Fife, B.T. Law, Sammy Hester, Shane Keasler and sons Marc and Brad at Auburn; Paul “Shorty” Trammell and Ollie Sanders at Sanford; Michael “Bubba” Hester at Central Michigan, and Paul Bishop, Al Henderson, Wayne Landrum and Steve Smith at Jacksonville State.
Johnson climaxed his career by rebuilding the Saks program from a 0-10 record the previous season to the state finals (1996) in four years.
He was selected as the state coach of the year twice and coached in the state all-star game.
In September of 1999, CCHS renamed its football field as “Warrior Stadium - Bobby Joe Johnson Field.”
Johnson was inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
After graduating from CCHS in 1958, Johnson played for Paul “Bear” Bryant at the University of Alabama before transferring to Jacksonville State. The captain of the Game-cocks his senior year, Johnson received the ACC MVP award
