Mississippi State University head volleyball coach Tina Seals has announced the hiring of Centre native Chris Cothran as an assistant volleyball coach.

A Cherokee County High School graduate, Cothran, 34, has coached more than 14 years on a variety of levels in Alabama and Georgia.

“We are pleased that Chris has joined the Mississippi State family and the volleyball Lady Bulldogs as an assistant coach,” said Seals. “He’s an outstanding coach with a great understanding of the game and exceptional communication skills. Chris is a great addition to our staff.”

Cothran will handle a variety of on-court and ad-ministrative duties, assisting with recruiting, team travel, team equipment and serving as the team’s primary liaison with the office of athletic academics.

A 2001 graduate of Shorter College in Rome, Ga., Cothran previously served as an assistant coach on Seals’ volleyball coaching staff during a four-year term at Northwest-Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals.

At NW-Shoals he assisted in the Lady Patriots’ climb to four consecutive NJCAA Region XXII volleyball championships, coaching teams that compiled a 162-34 combined regular season record from 2000 to 2003.

Cothran launched his coaching career at his alma mater. He served as CCHS assistant volleyball coach from 1997 to 1999, helping the Lady Warriors to three straight Elite Eight and state top five finishes. Cothran was also a CCHS assistant basketball coach in 1999 and 2000.

Cothran is married to the former Melissa Lehman of Wadesville, Ind
