Members of Cedar Bluff’s state quarterfinal football team are gradually rounding into basketball shape, and the results are starting to show.

Last Saturday, the Tigers (4-2, 3-1) had four players reach double figures in team’s 67-45 victory over Class 1A, Area 10 opponent Gaylesville.

Jamie Hampton posted a double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds.

Rodney Guins contributed 13 points, followed by Matt Wilson with 11 and Terrell Irons with 10.

Rick Peek scored 17 points for Gaylesville, followed by Corey Johnson with 11.

Hampton recorded another on Friday, as his 12 points and 15 rebounds were a big factor in Cedar Bluff’s 64-56 victory over Ragland.

Three other Tigers scored in double figures, with Guins contributing 16 points, Wilson 15 and Irons 11.

Jeremy Bryant pulled down 14 rebounds.

Cedar Bluff led for most of the game until Jarad Brock’s basket with a minute gone in the fourth quarter put the Purple Devils ahead 46-45.

Irons’ two foul shots at 6:49 regained the Tiger advantage for the next several minutes, but Brett Evans’ steal and lay-up with 1:28 left cut Ragland’s deficit to 58-55.

Wilson’s basket 20 seconds later pushed the Tiger lead to five, however, and his jump shot at 27.5 and Hampton’s free throw with 9.7 on the clock provided the hosts with enough insurance for the win.

“Both teams had good athletes on the floor for the whole ballgame, and we played hard,” said Cedar Bluff head coach Joe Carpenter. “We took over the inside game, and [Ragland] had a great outside game, and fortunately we came out on top.”

Aaron Jackson led Ragland with 17 points, followed by Jamel Brock with 14 and Matt McKinney with 10.

Guins’ two baskets over the first quarter’s final minute gave the Tigers a 17-7 lead.

Jackson’s trey with 2:25 let in the first half drew the visitors within 24-22, but Hampton’s traditional three-point play with two seconds remaining made it 30-24 in favor of the hosts at the half.

Cedar Bluff stretched its lead to nine points midway on Guins’ free throw at the 2:19 mark of the third quarter, but Jamel Brock’s three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining drew the Purple Devils within 43-42.

Ragland kept pace with the Tigers over the final eight minutes, but Guins’ nine points and some clutch foul shots down the stretch helped seal the win.

CEDAR BLUFF (64): Guins 16, Wilson 15, Hampton 12, Irons 11, Bryant 6, Brown 4.

RAGLAND (56): Jackson 17, Jamel Brock 14, McKinney 10, Jarad Brock 9, Evans 6
