Sand Rock came up short n the Class 2A, Area 13 softball tournament last Saturday at Fort Payne.

The Lady Wildcats (23-12) opened with a 1-0 loss in 18 inning to Sylvania, followed by a 3-2 victory over Fyffe.

The Lady Rockers were then eliminated after a 5-4 loss to Geraldine.

“The girls played well overall, but the loss to Syl-vania really drained them,” said Sand Rock head coach Brad Burt. “It mostly was a matter of us not getting the hits when we needed them. Several times we hit the ball hard in the gap with runners in scoring position, but their defense made the play. We just couldn’t get the bunt down today, and that hurt us because the games were all close ones.”

For the tournament, the Lady ‘Cats stranded 15 baserunners.

“We had some bad breaks and some bad coaching decisions,” said Burt. “If that didn’t happen, we would have won those ballgames.”

Sand Rock was leading Geraldine 4-0 before the Lady Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning.

“We had three hits [in the bottom of the inning], but we also had a few errors, and we couldn’t get anything going,” said Burt.

For the tournament, Taylor Burt struck out 42 in 29 and 2/3 innings. She allowed 12 hits and four earned runs and had no-hitter against Sylvania until the eighth inning. She fanned 26 batters in that game.

At the plate, Burt went 6-for-13 with three runs scored.

Amy Crane went 4-for-13, while Kristin Brown went 3-for-14
