The Sand Rock volleyball team hosted an impromptu block party last Thursday at Gaston.

The Class 2A No. 5 Lady Wildcats (22-3) rejected 11 shots on the way to a tri-match sweep over Gaylesville and the host Lady Bulldogs.

Sand Rock opened with a 25-15, 25-9 victory over the Lady Trojans (11-10), followed by a 25-22, 25-9 win over Class 1A No. 2 Gaston (12-5).

“We came out a little flat against Gaylesville but really came on against Gaston,” said Sand Rock head coach Lisa Bates. “We got some great minutes from Carrie [Robertson] and Gena [Farmer] against Gaylesville, and Karlie [Anderson] had some huge blocks against Gaston that really set the tone for the match. We’re playing really well right now, and the girls are communicating very well with one another.”

For Sand Rock, Jennifer Campbell had 19 assists, followed by Megan Battles with 11, Leanna Young with nine and Farmer with five.

Chelsey Chambers dished out 47 assists, while Lauren Bell served up three aces.

Anderson and Campbell each had three blocks, while Bell and Chambers each had two.

Bell came up with 34 digs, followed by Young with 11, Chambers with nine, Robertson with eight, Campbell and Farmer with seven each, Battles with six, Logan Smith with five and Anderson with three.

“We’re either up or we’re down,” said Gaylesville head coach Curt Hendon. “We can't seem to put together a good winning streak. We play well at times against good teams like tonight, and then we self-destruct. If we can ever play at a consistent level, we’ll be a good volleyball team.”
