GAYLESVILLE – The Gaylesville Trojans had two things in mind when they entertained Jefferson Christian on Friday night.

The first was to end the football season on a strong note, while the second was to get senior all-purpose back Cain Higgins a 1,000-yard rushing season.

The Trojans accomplished both of those goals by annihilating the Eagles 61-6.

Higgins led the charge for the Trojans (4-6). He rushed for 215 yards on 18 carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of 15, 22, 30 and 5 yards. It was the first time Higgins scored four touchdowns in a single game in his career.

As impressive as Higgins’s feat was, two Trojan defenders also had solid performances. Andrew Lindsey posted a team-high 16 tackles (one for lost yardage), had three sacks and a fumble recovery. Nick Reed had three interceptions to go along with eight tackles on the night.

Paul Van Pelt added 11 tackles and a sack for the Trojans. Justin Jennings, Casey Bishop, Jon Lemons and John David Jennings all recorded a sack on the night.

Trojan fullback Caleb McCord rushed for 113 yards on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns from 15 and 12 yards. He also blocked a punt on defense.

John David Jennings accumulated 60 yards on five carries and scored on a 22-yard touchdown run. Justin Jennings added 42 yards on three carries and a 2-yard touchdown run.

Gaylesville quarterback Luke Murphy accounted for another Trojan touchdown on a 13-yard pass to Reed. Brian Sanford connected on five extra-point attempts.

The Trojans built a 38-6 lead at the half.
