The Gaylesville Trojans knew their season would end last Friday night, so they wanted to go out with a bang.

In addition to all-purpose back Cain Higgins posting a 1,000-yard rushing season, the Trojan defense also made a statement against Jefferson Christian in a 61-6 rout. Nick Reed captured three interceptions to go along with eight tackles for the Trojans (4-6).

Teammate Andrew Lindsey posted a team-high 16 tackles (one for lost yardage), had three sacks and a fumble recovery in the win.

The defensive duo earned an honorable mention on the Alabama Sportswriters Association’s Players of the Week for Week 10.

While Gaylesville had a night to remember last Friday, the same can be said for Piedmont Bulldog junior quarterback Chase Childers.

Childers completed 7-of-9 passes for 193 yards and three scores (59, 30 and 15 yards), rushed for 88 yards on 12 carries and three more scores (12, 1 and 23 yards), and had an interception as Piedmont (8-2) downed Woodland 42-33.

Childers was also cited as an offensive honoree by the ASWA for Week 10.

In other statewide happenings, Hubbertville’s Tommy Haley-Ricks’ numbers were out of this world and earned him Alabama Sports Writers Association offensive player of the week honors.

Haley-Ricks had 24 carries for 420 yards (fifth-most in state history) and eight rushing touchdowns – 7, 64, 12, 60, 55, 41, 35 and 7 yards in Hubbertville’s 76-52 win. He also had a 49-yard touchdown receiving and returned a kickoff for 72 yards to inside the Vina 10.

His nine total touchdowns was a new AHSAA record and he missed breaking the Class 1A single-game scoring record of 57 points, held by Tony Dixon of Parrish and now the University of Kentucky and set against Hubbertville in 2003.

His performance overshadowed another other outstanding one from the weekend. Derrick Colvin of Jackson-Olin was 22-of-29 for 301 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 114 yards and three more touchdowns as the Mustangs beat Woodlawn.

On defense/special teams, Boaz senior defensive end Zane Pullen more than earned ASWA player of the week honors. He recorded 10 tackles, including six for loss, four sacks, one quarterback hurry, caused a fumble and covered a fumble in the Pirates 40-8 win Friday against Class 1A No. 6 R.A. Hubbard.

Pullen edged two other fine efforts: Charles Henderson defensive end Antonio Youngblood had two fumble recoveries, an interception and a sack in the Class 5A Trojans' 35-27 victory over 6A Northview. Linebacker Cory Lee of Prattville recorded 10 tackles, including three sacks, and forced a fumble that was recovered for a touchdown in Prattville's 47-0 win over Central-Tuscaloosa. Lee led a defense that held the No. 1 team in Class 5A to 56 yards in the first half and 154 for the game.

Some 50 players were nominated from ASWA members in Birmingham, Centre, Dothan, Florence, Gadsden, Huntsville, Montgomery, Oneonta, and Troy, while a five-member ASWA panel selected the winners and runners-up.

Other outstanding performances included:
