And, like the previous three meetings, the Lady Wildcats fell short of victory.
Fifth-ranked Geraldine (43-13) claimed the Area 10 championship with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 win over No. 6 Sand Rock (40-10). Both teams advance to Saturday’s regional play, with area runner-up Sand Rock traveling to Woodland.
“We’re right there with them, but we just can’t finish,” Sand Rock coach Lisa Bates said of her team’s matches against Geraldine. “It’s our mistakes. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot. We haven’t gotten over that mental edge with them.”
Sand Rock opened Monday’s area tournament with a victory over West End (22-24). The scores were 25-14, 25-12 and 25-22.
Leading the Wildcats for the night was Jennifer Campbell, who posted 26 kills, 16 digs and four blocks. Logan Smith added 54 assists. Karlie Anderson had 19 kills and five blocks. Carrie Robertson managed 14 kills. Megan Battles tallied 21 digs, six kills and four aces. Gena Farmer finished with 22 digs and Kayla Mashburn had eight digs.
Bates said her team knows it still has a lot of work ahead of them if it is to make another Elite Eight appearance.
“We’re still working toward our goal of getting to state, but we’ve got to work on us this week,” Bates said.
