FYFFE – The Fyffe Red Devils are headed back to the Class 2A state playoffs, while the Sand Rock Wildcats are now on the outside looking in.

The Red Devils clinched their ninth straight trip to the postseason and maintained a share of first place in Class 2A, Region 6 with a 34-0 victory over Sand Rock in high school football Friday.

Fyffe (6-2, 5-1) also denied Sand Rock coach Russell Jacoway his 200th career victory. Sand Rock (5-3, 3-3) is one game behind fourth-place Geraldine (5-3, 4-2) in the region.

Fyffe blocked two punts and forced four interceptions in the victory.

Taylor Thrash went over 4,000 yards rushing for his career. The Red Devil senior carried 19 times for 121 yards and four touchdowns. He needs 19 yards to break the school’s career rushing record.

Fyffe took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Thrash’s 6-yard run.

Thrash added a 3-yard touchdown with 1:35 left in the second quarter. The extra point was no good. Joseph Harris set up the score when he blocked a Wildcat punt.

Tyler Strickland had the other block. Benefield said Strickland, a defensive tackle, played well in his first game of the season. He’d been out with a broken foot.

The margin grew to 20-0 when Thrash intercepted a Sand Rock pass and then scored from 2 yards out with two seconds left in the first half.

Fyffe added second-half touchdowns on a 62-yard Thrash run and a 5-yard run by Tyler Wellington.

Justin Kyser led Sand Rock’s rushing attack with 53 yards on 14 carries. Quarterback Drew Norris completed 6 of 18 passes for 71 yards. Matt Cole and Wesley Pruitt led the Wildcat defense with six tackles apiece.

Sand Rock will try to rebound on Friday when it travels to Westbrook Christian.
