Two council members were sworn in Tuesday, Oct. 13, during the meeting of the Cedar Bluff Town Council.

Leatha Harp, who was unopposed in the District 5 race, was sworn in by Attorney Bill Hawkins as Jeffrey Harp, her son, held the Bible. Lenora McWhorter was the declared winner in the District 2 race. Her son, Paul McWhorter, held the Bible as she was sworn in and took her seat on the council.

Mayor Baker read a quite lengthy letter to the Attorney General requesting an opinion regarding the municipal elections held by the town of Cedar Bluff on August 26, 2008. The letter said, “Specifically, an opinion is requested from your office for guidance as to when certain elections should take place and which candidates should participate in said elections.” According to Attorney Bill Hawkins, the Attorney General’s opinion should be received within a short time. The council gave approval for Attorney Hawkins to send the letter requesting the ruling.

Concerned citizens addressed the council regarding Article II, Section 2.43 of the Zoning Ordinance. This section deals with manufactured homes built within five years of the date the building permit was issued. After much discussion, the council passed a motion to send this proposal back to the planning commission to consider not only the age of the mobile home being placed in the town of Cedar Bluff but also the appearance and physical condition of that home.

In other business, the 2009-2010 fiscal year budget was approved.

The council also will consider filling the vacancy on the Utility Board and Solid Waste Authority at the next meeting from three applications received.

Mayor Baker ended the meeting by enumerating some of the accomplishments of the town of Cedar Bluff. Some of the highlights included the purchase of four police cars with the latest equipment, the acquisition of a new fire truck and the receipt of a $400,000 downtown grant that resulted in new sidewalks and paving of streets.

The town bought new playground equipment along with donating money to the school, Gadsden State Community College, the Red Cross and the Cherokee County Historical Museum.

The next meeting of the Cedar Bluff Town Council will be Oct. 27, at 6 p.m.
