COLLINSVILLE – Shon McElrath was Mr. Everything for the Collinsville football team on Friday night. He accounted a touchdown on the ground, one through the air and had an interception on defense as Collinsville defeated rival Valley Head 33-14 to tie the all-time series between the two teams.

Collinsville (5-4, 4-3 Class 1A, Region 6) and Valley Head (4-5, 3-4) are currently 30-30-4 all-time dating back to 1926. But neither team will be headed to the playoffs this year. The Panthers, despite the win, were eliminated by a Cedar Bluff win over Gaylesville, 26-14.

“We put the most into this game that we have all year,” said Collinsville coach Alan Beckett. “We had a great week of preparation. Our kids really practiced hard. They responded well to two weeks of hard practice. Valley Head had one seven in a row over us. To win two in a row is really nice.”

Valley Head was already eliminated from the playoffs coming into the game.

“We played hard, but we made a lot of mistakes,” Valley Head coach Heath Kirby said. “Penalties took us out of our chances. We had our chance in the second half to win. But penalties took away three scoring opportunities.”

Collinsville jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Tyler Tidmore caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tray Reed on the opening drive.

Valley Head quickly answered on its next possession as Greg Blansit scored on a 65-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 6-6.

McElrath scored his rushing touchdown from 19 yards out as the Panthers retook the lead 12-6 with 10:13 left in the second quarter.

Collinsville’s Sharrard Crawley then caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from McElrath to extend the Panthers’ lead to 18-6 with 5:28 left in the second.

Valley Head’s Derek McMahan caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Levi Hulgan to narrow Collinsville’s lead to 18-14 with 10:43 in the third.

Collinsville answered as Justin Irvine ran one in from 4 yards out to give the Panthers a 26-14 lead with 7:53 left in the fourth.

The Panthers extended its lead to 33-14 with 4:39 left in the fourth on a 12-yard touchdown run by Reed.

Reed finished the game 11-of-19 passing for 123 yards. Blansit had 136 total yards for Valley Head.

Collinsville travels to face Florala on Friday.
