It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Cedar Bluff senior quarterback Kyle Crane and Cherokee County senior quarterback Coty Blanchard are ready for the playoffs.

Last Thursday, the duo came up big for their respective teams. Against Randolph County, Crane completed 19 of 24 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns (4, 9, 10, 25), while rushing for 50 yards on 12 carries with three TDs (6, 1, 1) in a 48-14 win over Randolph County.

Blanchard also turned in a stellar outing Thursday. Against Class 5A Scottsboro, he completed 21-of-28 passes for 338 yards and four touchdowns (67, 4, 47, 7 yards).

Blanchard also rushed for 73 yards on nine carries including a 15-yard touchdown in the Class 4A, top-ranked Warriors’ 34-0 victory. The win sealed Cherokee County’s second straight 10-0 regular season.

Both Crane and Blanchard’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Both were among those athletes selected by the Alabama Sportswriters Association in its weekly football honors.

Crane and the Tigers (7-3) open the Class 1A state playoffs at home against Victory Christian (9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. Blanchard and the Warriors are also at home against Haleyville (8-2) on Friday.

In other statewide happenings, shootouts are usually won by the football team with the most weapons.

In Russell County’s case on Friday night, that meant Deonta Holt – the ASWA offensive player of the week.

In a 65-50 last-man standing win over Eufaula, Holt accounted for 493 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns – rushing for 279 yards with four touchdowns (41, 6, 11, 67) on 27 carries and adding 214 yards in kick returns, including an 84-yarder to set up a touchdown. That doesn’t include the 98-yard return for score called back because of a penalty.

Calera’s Brandon Wells also garnered recognition by the ASWA panel. He rushed for 284 yards on 25 carries and five touchdowns (17, 1, 20, 14, 53) and threw for 136 on 15 of 23 passing in a 48-40 win over Chelsea.

The ASWA defensive/special teams player of the week is George Price of St. Jude. The senior did a lot of everything in a 42-14 win over Autaugaville – returning the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and picking off two passes. He also threw a 23-yard TD strike and rushed for a 71-yard touchdown.

The two finalists were Brock Kirby of Glencoe and Elba’s Michael Lindsey. Kirby had a hand in every one of his team’s points in a 17-14 win over Hokes Bluff. He kicked the game-winning 33-yard field goal and had six tackles to go with a pair of touchdown receptions and six total catches. Lindsey was in on 14 tackles and had an interception in the end zone that he returned 45 yards in a 42-6 win over Zion Chapel. He also had three punt returns for 92 yards – including a 70-yard scoring run – and had 59 yards rushing on two carries with a 24-yard TD.

Some 62 players were nominated by ASWA members from around the state, including Albertville, Birmingham, Centre, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Hartselle, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika and Tuscaloosa. The ASWA will continue to honor top performances throughout the playoffs through the AHSAA semifinals.
