TUSCALOOSA – The 2009 football season began with the Cherokee County Warriors hosting the Piedmont Bulldogs.

Since that game back on Aug. 28, both teams’ paths come full circle when they won their respective class championships over the weekend at the University of Alabama’s Bryant Denny Stadium.

On Thursday, Piedmont (13-2) clinched its first football state title with a dramatic 35-38 victory in overtime against Cordova in the Class 3A championship.

“It’s just the perfect ending to the season,” Piedmont coach Steve Smith said. “It’s just an awesome feeling.”

A day later, Cherokee County earned its first state championship — also in dramatic fashion — with a 31-27 victory against Jackson in the Class 4A title game. The win capped a 15-0 season for the Warriors.

“This is something these kids will remember all of their lives,” Cherokee County coach Tripp Curry said of his team. “My hat is off to these guys. You have to coach them a little bit, but they put the time in to get done what needs to get done.”
