The Alabama Sports Writers Association will not release its Mr. Football award winner on Christmas Day.

While that could be bad news, it’s actually good news for the 14 winners of the ASWA Back or Linemen of the Year – one of the 14 will be honored with the award in mid-January at the Mr. Football Award Banquet, saved by a sponsorship from Hibbett Sports.

The ASWA named its back and linemen of the year winners in the six classes of the Alabama High School Athletic Association as well as the Alabama Independent Schools Association when the group released its All-State team on Dec. 20.

One of those players in the running for the award is Cherokee County senior quarterback Coty Blanchard, the Class 4A Back of the Year.

Blanchard led the Warriors (15-0) to their first state championship with a 31-27 victory over Jackson back on Dec. 4.

For the season, Blanchard completed 200 of 289 passes for 2,916 yards and 35 touchdowns. He also led the Warriors in rushing with 1,161 yards on 151 carries with 20 touchdowns.

The Birmingham-based Hibbett Sports has agreed to sponsor this year’s banquet and the award.

The ASWA will still release its list of Super 12 football players on Christmas Day. The exact date of the award banquet will be determined in the next several days.
