Among those signing on the dotted line are Cherokee County High School quarterback Coty Blanchard, receiver Gabriel Chambers and offensive lineman Daniel Miller. Blanchard and Chambers are expected to sign with Jacksonville State University. Miller is expected to sign with Shorter College. Blanchard’s scholarship is for the dual role of football and baseball.
The signings are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in the Warrior field house.
Piedmont offensive lineman Seth Reedy is expected to sign with Southern Mississippi after receiving late interest from the University of Tennessee. Bulldog running back Christian Cantrell is expected to sign with Tennessee Tech.
Both signings will take place at the school at 2 p.m.

With area basketball tournaments this week, the Northeast Regional Tournaments isn’t that far away (Feb. 15-20).
To help get you ready for it, Alabama High School Athletic Association Northeast Regional Tournament week-long passes went on sale Monday and will be available through Feb. 18. The passes are on sale at the Jacksonville
State University Campus Bookstore located in the Theron Montgomery Building.
The tournament pass, which allows an individual admittance into every game, is available for $30. The passes must be purchased in person, as the pass includes a photo ID.
Tournament parking passes can also be purchased for $10 for each vehicle. They are also available at the JSU Campus Bookstore in the Montgomery Building.
The JSU Campus Bookstore is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. (Closes at 2 p.m. on Fridays).

While we’re still on the subject of basketball, the bracket of the Central Regional basketball tournament scheduled Feb. 16-20 at Alabama State University has been adjusted to coincide with the host university’s home basketball schedule.
The 48-team tournament, set up last summer to run from Tuesday through Saturday, has been reset to start a day earlier (Feb. 15) and conclude on Saturday to avoid a conflict with Alabama State’s basketball doubleheader on Saturday.
Four Class 1A games will be played on Monday, followed by eight games per day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Four championship games will be played Thursday, six on Friday and two on Saturday.
The 36-game event will feature 24 boys teams and 24 girls teams in six classes. The 12 class winners will advance to the Final 48 tournament Feb. 23-27 in Birmingham.

It’s hard to believe, but high school baseball season is right around the corner.
To help kick off the season, the 2nd annual Northeast Alabama Baseball Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 15-26. The tournament features nine teams, including Cedar Bluff, Cherokee County, Coosa Christian, Glencoe, Hokes Bluff, Piedmont, Ragland, Westbrook Christian and White Plains. Games will be played at Cedar Bluff, Cherokee County, Glencoe, Hokes Bluff, Ragland and Westbrook Christian.
On Feb. 15, Cedar Bluff will play White Plains at 10 a.m., followed by Hokes Bluff-White Plains at 12:30 p.m. Hokes Bluff will then face Coosa Christian at 3 p.m., followed by Cedar Bluff-Coosa Christian at 5:30 p.m.
Also on Feb. 15 at Westbrook Christian, Cherokee County takes on Glencoe at 1:30 p.m. followed by a game against Westbrook Christian at 4 p.m.
On Feb. 18, Cherokee County takes on White Plains at Cedar Bluff at 4:30 p.m. Cedar Bluff battles Glencoe at 6:30 p.m.
At Ragland on Feb. 20, Cedar Bluff faces Ragland at 10 a.m., followed by Cedar Bluff-Coosa Christian at 12:30 p.m.
In Centre on Feb. 20, Cherokee County takes on Westbrook Christian at 10 a.m., followed by Hokes Bluff-Westbrook Christian at 12:30 p.m. Piedmont battles Hokes Bluff at 3 p.m., and Cherokee County-Piedmont end the day’s action at 5:30 p.m.
At Hokes Bluff on Feb. 23, Piedmont takes on Westbrook Christian at 4:30 p.m., followed by Cedar Bluff-Hokes Bluff at 6:30 p.m.
At Glencoe on Feb. 23, Cherokee County battles Coosa Christian at 4:30 p.m.
The tournament wraps up on Feb. 26 at Cherokee County High School. Cedar Bluff takes on Westbrook Christian at 4:30 p.m., followed by Glencoe-Cherokee County at 6:30 p.m.

While we’re on the subject of baseball, the 2010 Cherokee County Baseball Tournament will have a new format this season. Instead of seeding teams, each of the five county schools will face each other from March 1-6 at Cedar Bluff High School. The team with the best overall record at the end of the tournament will be the tournament champion. If there is a tie for best record, tiebreakers will be head-to-head meetings, runs allowed and runs scored.
The 2010 Cherokee County Tournament schedule is as follows:
March 1: Sand Rock vs. Spring Garden, 4 p.m.; Cedar Bluff vs. Gaylesville, 6:30 p.m.
March 2: Spring Garden vs. Cedar Bluff, 4 p.m.; Gaylesville vs. Cherokee County, 6:30 p.m.
March 4: Sand Rock vs. Gaylesville, 4 p.m.; Cedar Bluff vs. Cherokee County, 6:30 p.m.
March 5: Spring Garden vs. Gaylesville, 4 p.m.; Sand Rock vs. Cherokee County, 6:30 p.m.

The Central Board of the Alabama High School Athletic Association held its second quarterly meeting of the school year last Wednesday in Montgomery. Among the topics discussed were the volleyball championship format and pending legislation.
The format of the volleyball championship program has been under study for the past year, including the value of the sub-state round. The board voted to continue evaluating the program for the next two-year classification period (2010-11 and 2011-12) and obtain data supporting various format options to consider.
After a brief discussion of the charter school bill now in the state legislature, the Board voted unanimously not to support charter schools until the effect they would have on the AHSAA program is known.
The board also voted unanimously to support the pending legislative bill that would notify coaches before the end of a school year what their contract status would be for the following school year.
The board heard a report from Greg Brewer, AHSAA coordinator of officials, concerning an ongoing feasibility study for using video replay during football championship games. A request to establish a pilot program using video replay is being made to the National Federation. A similar request has been made by the Indiana High School Association.

The 9th annual Youth Basketball Bash is set for Feb. 19-20 in Boaz. The event’s age divisions are boys 8-and-under, boys 10, 12-and-under, and girls 10, 12-and-under. Games will be played at Boaz High School, Boaz Middle School and the Boaz Recreation Center.
The entry fee is $75, with the proceeds going to the Boaz High School softball team. Entry deadline is Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 per person per day.
