Basketball Roundup: Sand Rock boys close out regular season with victory over Fyffe

SAND ROCK – Justin Kyser netted a game-high 20 points to lead Class 2A, No. 3 Sand Rock past Class 2A, No. Fyffe 75-65 on Monday.

Riley Norris added 16 points for the Wildcats (23-3). Brannon Burt had 15 points and Drew Norris added 12 points.

Fyffe was led by Josh Barksdale’s 13 points. Cody Hurley added 10 points.

Sand Rock hosts the Class 2A, Area 12 tournament beginning Friday against West End.

In girls action, Sand Rock lost to Fyffe 39-29. The loss dropped the Lady Wildcats to 15-12. They will play in the Class 2A, Area 12 tournament against Westbrook Christian on Thursday at Geraldine.

Ashville 71, Cherokee County 69 (OT)

ASHVILLE – Cherokee County’s Moryet Chambers drove the length of the floor for the game-tying layup at the buzzer at the end of regulation, but Ashville was able to hold on with a 71-69 overtime win on Monday.

Coty Blanchard connected on a 3-pointer to put the Warriors (13-7) up one with 20 seconds to go in regulation, but Ashville countered with a 3-pointer of its own to put the Bulldogs up by two with eight seconds left.

Blanchard led all scorers with 29 points, six rebounds and three steals. Chambers finished with 10 points, four boards, three steals and two assists.

Colin Perry came away with 13 points and five rebounds. D.J. Fife added eight points, four rebounds and two steals. Malandro Chambers ended with six points, three assists and two boards.

Kyle Looney led four Ashville players in double figures with 28 points. Xavier Newton netted 13. Alex Farmer finished with 12 points and Chris Brooks had 10 points.

Cherokee County travels to Jacksonville and opens the Class 4A, Area 12 tournament against Alexandria on Friday at 6 p.m.

Girls

No. 6 Ashville 42, Cherokee County 30

ASHVILLE – Bianca Bouthwell came away with 10 points and Jacie Tipton added nine points to lead Class 4A, No. 6 Ashville to a 42-30 victory over Cherokee County on Monday.

Stormy Penlan added six points for the Lady Bulldogs (25-2).

Lynden Curry and Chelsea Ray both scored six points for Cherokee County (8-10).

Cherokee County hosts the Class 4A, Area 12 tournament beginning Thursday.
