GERALDINE – The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats contained Geraldine’s Kristen White to just 11 points during Saturday’s Class 2A, Area 12 championship game. The only problem was Sand Rock connected on just 11 of 52 shots from the floor in a 44-34 setback.
“We did not shoot well tonight at all,” Sand Rock coach Lisa Bates said. “We relied too much on the 3-pointer (8 for 33) and we did not penetrate to the basket confidently. We did a good job defensively, but when your threes are off, you’ve got to have something else going for you. We didn’t have that tonight.”
Despite the loss, Sand Rock (16-13) will advance to Thursday’s Class 2A sub-regional round. The Lady Wildcats travel to North Sand Mountain (24-6), a 65-56 winner over Section in the Area 15 title game also on Saturday.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” Bates said. “We cross with an area that’s high-scoring, so we’ve got to play good defense and we’ve got to score.”
Against Geraldine (23-7), Gena Farmer led Sand Rock with 10 points and seven rebounds. Amber Henderson and Nicole Soignet both netted six points. Emily Ozment had four points and four rebounds. Paige Ashley added five assists and four boards. Carrie Robertson also had four rebounds.
In addition to White’s 11 points, Payton Chavis had nine points for Geraldine. Alanna Smith finished with eight points. Raney Body and Kaitlin Roe both had seven points.
Geraldine led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but stretched that out to a 24-16 advantage at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs led 33-22 at the end of three quarters.
