JACKSONVILLE – Coty Blanchard netted 16 points and grabbed four rebounds while D.J. Fife added 13 points and six boards, but it wasn’t enough for Cherokee County to overcome Jacksonville on Monday. The Warriors lost 85-69 in the Class 4A, Area 12 final.

Colin Perry added nine points for the Warriors (14-9). Keon Rucker had eight points, four boards and four assists. Freshman Josh Hale also had eight points.

As a team, the Warriors connected on 27 of 31 free throws, but the Golden Eagles were too much too handle.

Jacksonville (21-6) was led by Tristan Garmon’s 27 points. Ethan Maske added 16 points and Robert Quinn posted 13 points. Deonte Elston netted 10 points and Josh Willis came away with nine points.

Cherokee County trailed 22-16 at the end of the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles blew things open in the second by outscoring the Warriors 23-6 to take a 45-22 lead at the half. Cherokee County cut into Jacksonville’s lead at the end of the third and trailed 65-49, but couldn’t get any closer.

“They played a great basketball game,” Warrior coach Kori Walker said of Jacksonville. “We just had one bad quarter, and it proved to be too big a deficit to overcome.

“They shot the ball extremely well from start to finish. They made the shots and executed tonight, and that was the difference in the game.”

Cherokee County will travel to Guntersville on Friday at 7 p.m. in a Class 4A sub-regional showdown. The Wildcats defeated Plainview 57-40 in the Area 14 final on Monday. Plainview travels to Jacksonville, also on Friday.

“The good thing is when you win your first area (tournament) game, you still have an opportunity,” Walker said. “We would have like to have hosted a sub-regional game, but it didn’t go our way tonight. I know we played Guntersville last year, so the guys should be familiar with them.”
