One of Northeast Alabama football’s most potent offensive combinations was at it again last Friday.

Cherokee County quarterback Coty Blanchard completed 12-of-17 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns, both to receiver Gabriel Chambers, in a 47-15 whipping of Fayette County.

The duo’s night didn’t go unnoticed, as they both received recognition from the Alabama Sportswriters Association in its weekly Player of Week selections.

Chambers finished the game with three catches for 102 yards and two scores. Blanchard also rushed for 45 yards on seven carries and another score.

The Warriors put their 12-0 record on the line at home this Friday in a rematch against Oneonta (10-2). Cherokee County defeated the Redskins 37-21 back in Week 4 of the regular season.

In other statewide playoff happenings last Friday, Cordova’s Tim Simon had 374 yards on 31 carries – 290 yards in the second half – rushed for five touchdowns, including one of 62 and 84 yards in a 54-40 win over Trinity. On defense, Simon stripped Trinity quarterback Jack Poundstone of the ball and ran 74 yards to close out the first quarter.

Poundstone and Brantley’s Anthony Gulley were finalists for the offensive player award. The Trinity quarterback set an Alabama High School Athletic Association record for total offense with 614 yards – 492 in the air on 26-of-44 passing for six touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 122 yards.

Gulley touched the ball eight times in the first half, scoring four times in a 49-16 win over J.U. Blacksher. Gulley rushed for 190 yards on six carries and scored on runs of 79 and 95 yards. He had a 77-yard touchdown reception and returned a punt 40 yards for a score.

Oneonta’s Caleb Hullett earned tough ASWA defense/special teams honors, edging out Leeds’ Jonathon Rose and Colby Mays of Hamilton.

Hullett played every snap on offense at guard for a Redskin team that generated 359 total yards. He also had eight tackles, including two for loss, on defense. However, his biggest play of the night came on the game's last snap when he blocked the Alexandria extra point to give the Redskins a 34-33 overtime win.

Rose had three interceptions on the night against Sylvania as the state’s leading scoring defense held Sylvania without a point in a 38-2 win. The safety came when a Leeds offensive player was tackled in the zone and was just the 28th point given up by the Green Wave in 12 games.

Mays stopped a potential game-winning touchdown in overtime by West Morgan by punching the ball free from the ball carrier. It rolled through the end zone for a touchback, giving Hamilton the 17-14 win and a 12-0 mark for the first time in school history.

Some 34 players were nominated from ASWA members in Birmingham, Centre, Demopolis, Florence, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Oneonta with the finalists selected by a panel of voters.
