Cherokee County scored 12 runs in the first inning and didn’t look back in a 18-7 victory at Alexandria on Thursday. The win improved the Warriors’ record to 15-1 on the season and evened their Area 12 mark at 1-1.
“After a loss like we had, it could have gone the good way or the bad way for us. It went the good way,” Warrior coach Jim Garmany said. “The guys knew what they had to do. I was worried about the rain because guys can have a tendency not to focus on the game, but they showed what a veteran team they are. They wanted that win bad.”
Caleb Whorton had the big hit in the first inning against Alexandria (10-10, 1-1). Whorton connected on a grand slam, which put the Warriors up 12-0. He finished the game going 1 for 3 with four RBI.
Coty Blanchard had a perfect day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with four RBI. Brett Burgess was 3 for 4 with a RBI. Keon Rucker and Chase Weeks both went 2 for 4 with a RBI. Cole Sterling was 2 for 3 with a RBI and Kaleb Kines added a hit and a RBI.
Jayde Boatfield claimed the win on the mound for the Warriors. He worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on six hits with eight walks and four strikeouts.
“When you jump on a team like we did, it takes a lot off your pitchers,” Garmany said. “Jayde threw a great game, and we just kept adding runs to it.”
Cherokee County is scheduled to host Pleasant Valley on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
