On Thursday, both the girls and boys teams clinched their sixth consecutive Cherokee County championships. The Lady Tigers won nine of 11 track events held at Cherokee County High School. They also won six of seven field events on their home turf.
Meanwhile, the Tiger boys claimed all 10 track events in Centre, while also earning five of seven field events at Cedar Bluff.
Leading the charge for the Lady Tigers on the track was Izzy Armstrong. She claimed three events, including the 800-meter, 1600-meter and the 3200-meter runs. Armstrong was also a member of the girls 4x800 championship team, which also included Kaitlyn Gossett, Hannah Leach and Riley Johnson.
Candria Dupree claimed two individual track events, the 100-meter and 200-meter runs. Dupree was also part of the Lady Tigers’ 4x100 and 4x400 title teams. Other members of the 4x100 team were Katie McBurnett, Bre Stewart and Audrianna Hargitt. Jessica Brannon, Bre Stewart, Jasmine Adams made up the rest of the 4x400 team.
McBurnett claimed another track title for the Lady Tigers by winning the 300-meter hurdles.
In the field events, Mechelle Adams took the top spots in the javelin, triple jump and long jump. Brannon won the pole vault, while Breanna Holloman claimed the shot put and Deanna Hanks was tops in the discus throw.
“I think we did really strong in our field events,” Cedar Bluff girls coach Joe Carpenter said. “Our running events were hit and miss. Surprisingly, our 4x100 team was pretty decent. We weren’t expecting that. They’ve come on and worked really hard.
“We’ve got some work to do in the distance, and hopefully that’s going to come around next week (at sectionals). We’ve still got two weeks until state, so we’ve set our eyes on qualifying next week.”
Nick Reed and Tony McGinnis won multiple track events for the Tiger boys. Reed took first in the 200-meter and 400-meter runs. He was also a part of Cedar Bluff’s 4x100 title team, along with Hayden Hackett, Brian Roebuck and Zach Taylor. Reed also shared the 4x400 title with McGinnis, Dylan Welchel and DeAngelo Hardy.
In addition to the 4x400, McGinnis also won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs.
Welchel was also tops in the 110-meter hurdles in addition to being part of the Tigers’ 4x800 championship team. Dustin Khan, Nick Combs and Roebuck were the other Tiger members.
Taylor claimed the 100-meter run, and Kyle Crane took the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles.
McGinnis also claimed first place in the pole vault. Tyric Scales was tops in the javelin and triple jump. Hackett took first in the long jump and Jim Nelson earned a title in the shotput.
“We just have good kids who have good attitude and good effort,” Cedar Bluff boys coach Mark Mitchell said. “We’re in as good of shape as we’ve ever been. We’ve got kids who have stepped up who weren’t on the team last year or didn’t have a lot of responsibility last year. They’ve stepped up and took the places of the seniors who graduated. Everybody’s worked real hard, and we’re trying to peak at the right time.
“They know if they give everything they’ve got, at the end of the day, there might be something waiting on them at the end. That’s some good motivation to have.”
Sand Rock finished second in the meet. The Wildcats had four top finishers in Megan Battles (high jump), Jalisa Ferguson (400-meter run), Wesley Pruitt (discus) and Doug Mackey (high jump).
Gaylesville’s Krysta Nichols took first in the 100-meter hurdles.
The Cherokee County Warriors did not participate in the meet.
