Sand Rock senior setter Chelsey Chambers signed a volleyball scholarship with Gadsden State Community College on Friday. On Friday afternoon, Chambers signed her letter of intent to play for the Cardinals. She finished her final high school season with 1,313 assists, 296 digs, 116 kills, 83 blocks and 76 aces in 140 games (57 matches). For her high school career, Chambers ended with 4,338 assists and led the Lady Wildcats to four straight Elite Eight appearances and three Final Fours at setter.
This season, Sand Rock finished with a record of 52-5.
"I’m excited to get to play volleyball for two more years," Chambers said. "I love volleyball so much. I couldn’t imagine the last high school game being the final game I ever played. It would be weird for me to go to college and not have something (athletic) to do. Playing volleyball has kept me happy."
Sand Rock volleyball coach Lisa Bates calls Chambers "irreplaceable."
"What Chelsey can do is special," Bates said. "We’re proud of her and know she’s going to do well, but we’re also going ‘Wow, we’ve got to go back to the drawing board.’ We’ve got a long road to try and redo some things and find out what works best for us.
"We’re going to have somebody that can set, but the things Chelsey Chambers can do are not replaceable. She’s only our second volleyball player to sign, and we’re proud of her. We know she’s going to do well and she’s going to represent us well. She’s going to represent Gadsden State well."
Chambers has a connection with Gadsden State head coach Angie Reavis. Reavis coached Chambers in club volleyball her sophomore and junior seasons. Chambers also said Reavis has scouted her since her freshman year.
Bates said knowing what Reavis expects should serve her well at Gadsden State.
"Coach Reavis has worked with our team in the summer, so she knows what Chelsey’s weaknesses and strengths are," Bates said. "She’s been under Coach Reavis, so she knows what she’s getting into. She knows what kind of coach she is, how hard she pushes and what she expects. I think it’s going to be a good fit. I think she’ll really succeed there."
