In this job, I come into contact with a lot of sportswriters from around the state. We share information and help each other when we can. It’s kind of like a brotherhood.

One thing that has been a major topic of discussion over the past few weeks with some of my fellow colleagues has been the Cherokee County Warrior football team. A lot of them around the state are wondering if the Warriors are for real.

When asked, I tell them all the same thing: “I think they can make it to Birmingham.” I don’t know if they believe me, but they haven’t had the privilege to see what I have seen.

Click here to view a highlights video from the game on Friday.

This is a team with all the ingredients: A powerful offense, a stout defense, speed at almost every position, an excellent coaching staff and great community support.

The Warriors will need every bit of that come Friday at No. 1 Deshler if they are to make it to the Class 4A state championship game.

While some folks around the state may not believe the Warriors have a chance to win, I do. They’ve given me no reason to believe otherwise.

Thirteen times this season I’ve picked them to win. Thirteen times they’ve come through. Come on guys, let’s make that 14 for 14 … Cherokee County 28, Deshler 27.

Speaking of the Warriors, you can catch video highlights of last week’s game against Oneonta on our Prep Central sister website. The address is www.prepcentralonline.com. Look under the Teams heading and click on NE Alabama for the link to the game story and video.

Nine major contributors to prep athletics in Alabama have been selected to the 19th class of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2009 class, which will be inducted at a March 23 banquet at the Renaissance Hotel at the Convention Center in Montgomery, includes coaches, administrators and contributors.

Selected were Larry Andrews, Tom Danner, Joe Frank Fowler, Clarence Marble, Simpson Pepper, Larry Simmons, Barbara Snider, George O. “Shorty” White and Bailey Yelding. Andrews, Danner, Marble and Pepper are deceased.

The 17-member Hall of Fame committee made the selections from 50 nominations on the Hall of Fame ballot.
