Westbrook Christian ends Sand Rock’s baseball season

RAINBOW CITY – In completion of a game that began on Friday, Sand Rock was unable to force a third game and fell 11-3 to Westbrook Christian on Monday in the second round of the Class 2A state playoffs.

Sand Rock (14-11) lost the first game on Friday 10-0 and trailed 3-2 in game two before lightning and rain forced the delay until Monday.

The Wildcats tied game three on Riley Norris’ RBI-single. Norris then retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings, but Westbrook (24-9) took a 6-3 lead by scoring three runs in the sixth off three Sand Rock errors.

Westbrook added another five runs in the seventh, highlighted by Chad Sharp’s two-run home run.

Chase Saunders relieved Miller in the sixth and had a 1-2-3 inning with one strikeout.

Zack Swagert relived Saunders in the bottom of the seventh. He struck out the first batter, allowed a single, then struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Barr Miller got the win and Norris took the loss.

For Westbrook, Matthew Reaves and Jake King each went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Norris who had two hits to lead Sand Rock, one of which was a RBI-single.

The eighth-ranked Warriors travel to Florence on Friday for a quarterfinal series against No. 5 Mars Hill Bible.
