Burt scored a game-high 26 points on Saturday to lead the Wildcats past the Panthers 62-53 on Saturday.
The Wildcats (4-3) trailed 16-14 at the end of the first quarter thanks to Andrew Allen’s 3-point shot at the buzzer. The Panthers (1-6) extended their lead to 32-29 at the break before the Wildcats went on a 18-5 run in the third quarter to lead 47-37.
“We played with intensity (in the third quarter),” Sand Rock coach Brian Mackey said. “That’s what we’ve got to have on defense and offense. Our hats are off to Spring Garden. They came ready to play and played a tough game. It was an ugly win, but we’ll take it.”
Spring Garden was led by Jake Scott’s 14 points. Allen added 13 points. Tyler Smart tallied eight points and grabbed seven boards. Trey Littlefield finished with seven points.
But the story of the game was Burt.
“When he got to scoring on the outside, it was hard to defend him,” Spring Garden coach Stan Jones said. “They got several easy buckets and got us in the hole (in the third quarter). We have to work to get ours, but they can run down and get theirs easy.
“The kids battled though, and they played hard. They came in and did what I asked them, but we just fell a little short.”
In addition to Burt’s 26-point outing, Justin Mackey scored 12 points for the Wildcats. Matt Cole came away with six points.
“The guys stepped up and got the job done,“ Brian Mackey said. “I’m just happy we got a win.”
