Sand Rock senior volleyball setter Chelsey Chambers did all she could to get better at the sport she loves.

Following the Lady Wildcats’ 2007 run to the Final Four, Chambers spent the off-season working to get that extra incentive to help give Sand Rock a state championship.

Part of that off-season training was participating on the North-South All-Star volleyball matches in July, where she got to play alongside some of the state’s best players.

Chambers also worked with Gadsden State Community College volleyball coach Angie Reavis, whom she’ll play for next fall after signing a scholarship with the Cardinals.

While a state championship was not in the cards for Sand Rock this season, Chambers still had an impressive year nonetheless to cap her career.

Chambers finished her final high school season with 1,313 assists, 296 digs, 116 kills, 83 blocks and 76 aces in 140 games (57 matches). She led the Lady Wildcats to a 52-5 record and to their fourth straight Class 2A Elite Eight appearance.

For her career, Chambers had 4,338 assists.

All of Chambers accolades were recognized by the Cherokee County volleyball coaches, as she was tabbed their 2008 All-County Volleyball Player of the Year.

“Chelsey really deserves this honor,” Sand Rock coach Lisa Bates said. “She has been crucial to the success of our team and our program over the years. We are very excited about what she

has done for our program and for what she will do at the collegiate level. She is a very talented setter who has worked hard for this award and has truly earned that title for this season.”

Chambers said she's proud of the honor.

"Setting is not as easy as it looks," she said. "People think since I'm a setter that I don't hit the ball, but you have to be smart. You have to be more deceptive than anything. You've got to know where their blockers are and set where they're not."

Chambers is one of five Lady Wildcats selected on the All-County team. The others are outside hitters Jennifer Campbell and Carrie Robertson, middle hitter Megan Battles and right side player Lauren Bell.

Campbell came away with 564 kills, 415 digs, 63 aces, 47 blocks and 10 assists this season. Robertson tallied 329 kills, 127 digs, 48 aces and 27 blocks. Battles posted 378 kills, 281 digs, 82 blocks and 44 aces. Bell finished with 619 digs, 117 aces, 84 kills, 74 assists and 51 blocks.

Cherokee County had four players selected by the coaches for the team. Those selections were outside hitters Haley Highfield and Kaitlyn Griffith, middle hitter Malorie Rosser, and libero Laura Rochester.

Cedar Bluff is represented by middle hitter Audrianna Hargitt, libero Candria Dupree and outside hitter Tanessa Fife. Gaylesville had two selections in hitters Amber Moseley and Krista Nichols. Spring Garden middle hitter Shelby Malone rounds out the team.
