Cherokee County Herald Sports Editor Shannon Fagan was recognized at the Alabama Sportswriters Association 39th Convention held in Birmingham Sunday for winning two awards.

Fagan won First place in the Best Story or Series Writing Best Game Story for a non-daily publication for his story entitled “Rock Stars-Burt’s lay-up at the buzzer propels Sand Rock on to the final four.”

Fagan was runner-up in the Best Story or Series Writing Best Column and/or Feature for his column, “On the road to recovery, Hampton helping others while coming back from knee surgery.”

The Birmingham News writers Kevin Scarbinsky, Don Kauler Jr. and Ray Melick, according to reports, received the Alabama Sportswriters Association’s highest writing award, the 10th Herby Kirby Award for their investigative story on “Questions over fishing trip Curtis Anderson and UA football players.”

The Mobile Press-Register took home seven awards while the Birmingham News had four awards. The Huntsville Times and the Times Daily has three awards. The Opelika/Auburn News, The Gadsden Times, the Montgomery Advertiser, the Franklin County Times and the Cherokee County Herald each earned one award, according to reports.
