Agents identify drowning victim

Officials have released the name of a Leesburg woman who apparently drowned in the Coosa River over the weekend in Cherokee County. The victim, according to reports, was identified as Debbie Patricia Meadows, 50.

According to reports, emergency crews were dispatched to an area off Money’s Bend Road in Cedar Bluff around midnight Saturday evening, July 3 after receiving a call that a woman had fallen from a 27-foot sailing boat into the water.

When crews arrived on the scene, they were able to recover the body within minutes. Coroner Don Rogers pronounced her dead at the scene, reports said.

Responding agencies included the Alabama Marine Police, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Bluff Police Department, Cedar Bluff Fire Department, Cherokee EMS and Cherokee County Rescue Squad.

The body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy. The investigation continues.
