The camp showcased elementary school kids’ abilities in several different drills, including punt, pass and kick competitions. Several of the Tiger upcoming seniors were also on hand to help with instruction.
McWhorter said the camp is a good way for his staff and players to get to know and interact with the younger generation.
"A lot of our players from years past have come through this camp through the years," McWhorter said. "Us getting to know these kids names on a name basis in kindergarten, first grade all the way through, that’s real big for us. It gives us some time to spend with them because we really don’t get to until they become varsity football players. It’s been real good for us in the past and we hope it still will be a good thing for our football program."
The camp was broken up into two days, with Monday’s session concentrating on defensive and offensive positions. Tuesday’s session dealt with skills and agility competitions.
McWhorter said his players had "as much fun as the kids."
"That’s a good part about being a small school. Those little kids get to see the older kids and know who they are a little bit. The younger kids, any time they see a jersey, they go crazy. Football has been a big part of our school tradition for a long time. There’s always an interest here in football."
McWhorter also said he was impressed with what he saw from the younger kids.
"We’ve got good potential coming up," he said. "You kind of spot early on who may have some athletic ability. It’s pretty neat to see how those kids grow and watch it happen."
